Trail swing

A daily compendium of helpful reporting and commentary surrounding the pivotal 2024 elections in the United States. You won't find horse race coverage here, or the standard "both sides" BS that passes so often for political journalism. What you will find are links, with brief commentary, to work that I believe advances the conversation we must be having about America's – and the world's – future. Everything is at stake this year. (Unfortunately, some of the work I point to is behind paywalls.) To learn more about my motivations for this project, please read this.

Voting rights and wrongs

Crazy in AZ

After Winning In Arizona, Election Deniers No Longer See A Problem With The Results
One of the predictable, yet striking, aspects of the right’s periodic embrace of election denialism is that those who espouse it only see problems when they lose. That dynamic played out again this…
This week’s sudden embrace of a system that these same candidates had previously declared unsafe and marred by fraud is part of a pattern among election deniers that, experts warn, could continue in November: easily accept their victories if they win or cry fraud if they lose.

Arizona is the epicenter of right-wing election denial. But as this article notes, denial applies only when the right-wingers lose. In other words, these extremists believe that the only legitimate outcome of an election is a victory for the extremists. Of course that is ludicrous. It's also dangerous. And it's part and parcel of a political movement that believes Democrats cannot be allowed to take office – and that any amount of voter suppression ahead of elections, or (sometimes violent) denial after the fact, is entirely proper.

Somethings smells off at Musk's pro-Trump PAC

How an Elon Musk PAC is using voter data to help Trump beat Harris in 2024 election
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he created America PAC, which collects data in swing states key to the 2024 election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
So that person who wanted help registering to vote? In the end, they got no help at all registering. But they did hand over priceless personal data to a political operation.

There's an odd odor coming from everything Musk touches, and this is no exception. People connecting from uncompetitive states get sent to voter registration sites. People from swing states are confronted with requests for all kinds of personal information, but get no help. What's happening with all the data? Why the different treatment in swing states? Lots of questions here. Now, it's possible that this is merely growing pains at a legitimate operation, but we're talking about Elon Musk and his right-wing pals, right?

What's at stake

Trump world corruption

Since receiving the intelligence about Sisi, the Justice Department had been examining whether money moved from Cairo to Trump, potentially violating federal law that bans U.S. candidates from taking foreign funds. Investigators had also sought to learn if money from Sisi might have factored into Trump’s decision in the final days of his run for the White House to inject his campaign with $10 million of his own money. Those questions, at least in the view of several investigators on the case, would never be answered, The Post found.

This aborted investigation – shut down by Trump's hyperpartisan attorney general – is yet another reminder that Trump world is a total swamp of moral, financial, and political corruption. Epic, unprecented sleaze pervades everyone in Trump world: the boss, his family, and pretty much all who come into his direct (and often indirect) orbit. If the most corrupt president in American history gets back into the White House, the abuses of the past are going to look tame next to what comes next.

Crypto cons

Bitcoin Goes All In With Trump
With 10 senators and Trump in attendance at the national Bitcoin conference, the crypto currency moves from the fringes to the center of political life.
[T]he industry has successfully pushed a false narrative to pundits and political consultants that millions of single-issue crypto voters could sway the upcoming elections. More importantly, it has shoveled tens of millions of dollars under the noses of candidates.

The cryptocurrency industry has been awash in scams and fraud for years, and now it's trying to buy political respectability it blatantly does not deserve. How? Well, by sending money to politicians, of course. Trump's decades-long history of serial corruption makes him a natural fit with the sleazebags. Lately, Wall Street has moved into the sector, seeking new sheep to fleece – and a new Trump presidency would likely guarantee epic new levels of fraud, and major risk to our overall economy. Stay away from the entire con game if you possibly can.

Milestone

Kamala Harris effectively clinches Democratic nomination for president
Vice-president ‘honored’ to be nominee after securing delegate votes – but nomination not official until Monday
Kamala Harris said on Friday she was “honored” to have secured enough votes from delegates to become the Democratic presidential nominee, making her the first Black woman and person of south Asian heritage to lead a major party ticket.

What you can do

Register to vote in your state | Vote.gov
Find the information you need to make registration and voting easy. Official voter registration website of the United States government.

Voting is just part of democracy, but it's the essential place to start. Make sure you're registered. Doublecheck in the fall, well before Election Day, because in some states Republican officials are removing people, mostly those who tend to vote for Democrats, from voting rolls.
